Equal Play

Documentary

A few months ago we put our souls and craft into the making of some animation sequences for “Equal Play”, a documentary that explores the transformative power of sports for disabled people through the stories of two British children.  As we normally do, we merged Photorealism with Illustration seamlessly, trying to find a good balance between representation and abstraction. We kept all the compositions really minimal from a formal standpoint. Using the same muted white full of texture as a background. By doing so, we gave cohesion between all the animations and most importantly, we added room to focus the audience’s attention into the character’s emotional space, whether it is struggle or playful. Texturing was key in all the scenes, we set a brush library in that regards and used loops to bring those strokes to life.  We also explored Typography as an illustrated element. It brought new levels of meaning beyond its gestural shape. By doing so, we were speaking in a subtle way about about Identity and we’re honoring the diversity of perception, which ultimately were one of the main subject matters of the film.

Here you can see a reel of the animated parts. If you have further interest, you can watch the documentary in its entirety HERE. The documentary is directed by Lily Ahree and produced by Robert Ford.
